Job Description

 

Position Title:                         Child Abuse Medical Evaluator

Direct Supervisor:                 SAFEchild Advocacy Center Director         



Supervising Physician:           A licensed pediatrician on staff at local hospital, recognized expert in child abuse evaluations



Work schedule:   The person in this position will be required to work flexible hours based on the needs of the SAFEchild Advocacy Center, taking into consideration the needs of the PNP as well.  The schedule will be set by the Director and will reflect a 30 hour work week.

Position Description:

The SAFEchild Advocacy Center is seeking a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner to work as a Child Abuse Medical Examiner.  Child Abuse Medical Examiners provide medical assessments for children suspected to be victims of abuse and/or neglect.  The PNP will also participate in a multidisciplinary team approach to the evaluation of suspected child abuse.







The SAFEchild Advocacy Center is a child friendly, facility providing positive outcomes for victimized children and their families.  Children are referred to the SAFEchild Advocacy Center from law enforcement and child protective services because of suspected sexual and physical abuse and/or neglect.  Services at the SAFEchild Advocacy Center include a comprehensive medical examination with documentation of signs of abuse and neglect, a digitally recorded interview with a specially trained child abuse evaluation specialist, and referrals for on-going services including mental health services and family support.







Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

Duties and responsibilities include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Maintain strict standards of confidentiality
  • Perform sensitive and thorough medical examinations of children for whom there are concerns of child sexual abuse, physical abuse and/or neglect, including colposcopy and photo documentation when indicated
  • Obtaining laboratory studies to rule out sexually transmitted diseases and other genital infections
  • Collection of Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits (SAECK), if necessary
  • Ordering any necessary x-rays or imaging studies
  • Treating acute illnesses (particularly STIs) as indicated and arrange follow-up
  • Providing pregnancy prevention when indicated after appropriate consent is obtained
  • Providing information regarding medical findings to child protective service workers and/or law enforcement officers who are assigned to investigate the abuse of the victim child within the legal guidelines of confidentiality and ethical codes
  • Complete documentation and reports regarding the medical examination of the child
  • Attend Multidisciplinary Team Meetings and provide information that supports fair decisions.
  • Help develop the victim’s individual service plan to reduce risk of present or future harm.
  • Be available as an expert witness in court if subpoenaed
  • Collaborate with the SAFEchild Advocacy Center staff  to determine services needed for the child victim and the non-offending family members
  • Other duties as requested by the SAFEchild Advocacy Center Director and SAFEchild Advocacy Center Medical Director.  

Required Education:  

  • Completion of education and training necessary to be a registered nurse, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a graduate-level nurse practitioner program
  • Passing of the national board certification in pediatrics
  • Appropriate professional degree and licensure as Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant

Experience:  

 

  • Must possess appropriate professional degree and be licensed in the State of North Carolina
  •  At least three years clinical experience examining and treating pediatric patients
  • Experience with a colposcope and digital camera
  • Experience in performing gynecological examinations of children. 
  • Experience in conducting evaluations of child sexual abuse victims preferred

 

Knowledge, skill, and abilities:

Knowledge, skill, and abilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Knowledge of the dynamics of families where abuse and/or neglect is occurring
  • Work effectively in complicated and/or crisis situations
  • Work as a team member with the SAFEchild Advocacy Center’s staff and staff from collaborating agencies
  • Establish rapport with children of all ages
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

 

Specialized and on-going training will be provided and continuing education in the field of Child Abuse Evaluation in order to keep up with current practices and standards of care will be expected.

 

Other requirements for employment:

The person in this position must have a valid driver’s license and must pass an extensive criminal background check and be eligible to be bonded.

 

Position Class:   Non-exempt and is subject to Wage and Hour guidelines for such positions.

3.     The cardiology division of the Department of Pediatrics UTHSC-SA  is looking for a
